Speculum

If you have been to a doctor, gynecologist or infertility specialist for a pap smear then you have become very familiar with a speculum. Most Doctors will walk through the procedure, especially if it is your first time in for the exam. Trips to an infertility specialist will also result in the use of a speculum. A large number of instruments in the doctor's office are used on all patients, but a speculum is definitley not one size fits all.

The speculum is the device used to examine any body cavity, but typically it is for vaginal examination. It allows for a clear view and accurate diagnosis. A doctor will typically use the speculum in conjunction with a light and miror to examine the vagina and cervix in its entirety. There are also illumination systems available that allow a physician to use the instruments and provides a better view of the tissue being examined. With the advancements in women's health being so progressive, doctors can now better and more quickly diagnose and offer treatment.

So how do you know the correct size? With an appearance that can be more than intimidating, the speculum seems to be the women's least favorite part of her visit. The number one complaint of most women is the size of the speculum being used. Not only are there 23 different types, there are more than 30 different sizes to choose from. In addition there are numerouse options for specula sizes ranging from virgin or XS to XXL. Doctors also have a choice between a reusable stainless steel speculum or a plastic disposable speculum.
